Description

I have had the reference book "Doughboy To GI : US Army Clothing And Equipment 1900 - 1945" since I was a kid.  I liked watching old War Movies and was interested in the stuff the soldiers were using.  My Grandfather was also in the Army Air Forces during WW2.  My Mom had three Uncles in the Marine Corps.  My reference book was mainly just photos of one guy's collection of militaria and didn't have an example of every US Military issued item.  Sometimes I see something not in my extensive reference book.  I have been trying to make an effort to study equipment from other periods and nations.

This set of photos shows a Gas Mask Storage Box.  It looks very much like a Foot Locker but is constructed differently.  It has a different inside that never had a top tray like a Foot Locker.  It also has mortise and tenon joints on the corners, which Foot Lockers do not have.  Foot Lockers tend to have corner reinforcement brackets.  There is a marking for the M1A2 Gas Mask on one side of this storage box.  The other side has had the markings painted over and new markings for the M2A2 type of Filter Mask have been added.  The top of the storage box also has markings for the M2A2 type of filter mask.  This storage box is marked that it held 12 of the M2A2 type of Gas Masks.  The Doughboy to GI book does show the two types of masks that this box once held, but it doesn't show one of these storage boxes.
