United States Navy Gas Cans

Description

I have had the reference book "Doughboy To GI : US Army Clothing And Equipment 1900 - 1945" since I was a kid.  I liked watching old War Movies and was interested in the stuff the soldiers were using.  My Grandfather was also in the Army Air Forces during WW2.  My Mom had three Uncles in the Marine Corps.  My reference book was mainly just photos of one guy's collection of militaria and didn't have an example of every US Military issued item.  Sometimes I see something not in my extensive reference book.  I have been trying to make an effort to study equipment from other periods and nations.

This set of photos shows some Navy used Jerry Cans.  WW2 era Army Gas Cans are typically marked "QMC", and "USA".  The "QMC" means Quartermaster Corps.  The Army changed to Cans with just a "US" marking on the sides during the Korean War.  WW2 and Korean War era cans Marine Corps Cans are marked "USMC" on the sides.  WW2 era Marine cans tend to only have one side marked, where as Korean War era Marine cans have the USMC on both sides.  Vietnam War era Marine marked cans have a "US" above the "X" and a "MC" below the "X".  Cans with a small "USMC" marking on the bottom where manufactured markings are, are not Marine Corps.  Those are "United States Metal Container" company manufactured.  WW2 to Korean War Marine Corps cans have different maker names on the bottoms.  The Vietnam War era "MC" marked Marine Corps cans tend to have no manufacturer markings on the bottom.  Water Cans tend to have the manufacturer markings on the top, or no markings at all.  I have also seen some WW2 era gas cans with top manufacturer markings, but not many.  I have seen both Army "USA QMC" and Marine "USMC" marked water cans.  I have only ever seen three Navy "USN" marked Gas Cans.  I have never seen a "USN" marked water can.  I do not know if they exist?  I do know that Navy marked cans are very hard to find.  I have however found cans that were painted navy colors.  There is a Navy White, and a Navy Battleship Gray.  I show some cans that are those colors in this set of photos.  The can on the far left is a 1945 dated Army "USA QMC" water can that has been painted white over the Olive Drab Green.  The next can over to the right is a 1943 dated Marine Corps Gas Can with the German style lid.  Only WW2 Marine Cans have the German style lid, the Korean War and latter Marine cans have the typical Gas and Water can lids.  The Marine Can I show here has a gray top and a white body painted over the Olive Drab Green.  The next can over I show is a Korean War era 1950 dated Army "US" Olive Drab Water Can that has been painted a gray.  The final can I show on the far right is unmarked water can that is a gray color.  It has not been repainted and the gray color is the original paint job.  I believe the Navy had way fewer land vehicles than the Army or the Marines.  They probably borrowed some cans from the other branches of the military.

I much latter, came across a 1943 dated "USN" galvanized gas can.  I added photos of it towards the bottom of this set of images.  The gas can had "USN" marked on both sides.
